First Draft Baltimore Region TIP 2005-2009 Available for Public Review

BALTIMORE (April 21, 2004)
–  Finding out about what’s being done to improve transportation in your community just got a little easier. Starting April 21st, a new website (bmc.baltometro.org/tips_web) will allow the public to review the proposed transportation projects in the Baltimore metropolitan area. Visitors to the website can review draft projects near their home or in the region. Included with the project descriptions are funding requests and a map showing the location of the project (if appropriate). Print copies are also available in many libraries. Please check the website or call 410-732-0500 x 1047.

The information includes a detailed listing of projects included in the metropolitan Baltimore Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). The TIP documents the anticipated timing, cost, and rationale for transportation improvements to be made in the Baltimore region over the next five years. It is a program of specific projects, not a plan.

Examples of projects listed in this database include:

  • Road resurfacing and bridge repairs, rehabilitation, and painting
  • The creation of pedestrian overpasses near schools and the building of pedestrian/bicycle trails
  • The acquisition of wheelchair accessible buses and other vehicles
  • Construction of a new park-and-ride facility and the expansion of surface parking at local MARC stations
  • Evaluation of current traffic command and control systems and the installation of new traffic signal detection systems
  • Funding for the Job Access and Reverse Commute Program, assisting welfare recipients and other low-income individuals access to employment
In accordance with federal guidelines, the TIP is a translation of recommendations from the long-range transportation plan for the Baltimore region into a short-term program of improvements. As such, the TIP ensures ongoing consistency between plan recommendations and project implementation in the region.

The TIP also serves as a multi-modal listing of transportation projects in the region for which federal funding requests are anticipated between fiscal years 2005-2009.

The activities funded by the BRTB are supported primarily through federal dollars. Public participation is extremely beneficial in making sound decisions. Transportation affects most of us every single day, so public input is crucial. The public is encouraged to visit the TIP database at http://bmc.baltometro.org/tips_web <http://bmc.baltometro.org/tips_web> or view a print copy at local libraries and submit comments by Monday, May 24, 2004 to Pete Gutwald, Chair, Baltimore Regional Transportation Board, (Attention: Public Involvement Coordinator) 2700 Lighthouse Point East, Suite 310, Baltimore, MD 21224-4774, fax # 410-732-8248, or e-mail: mhaines@baltometro.org.
