Description of Anticipated Transportation Planning Activities Available

Activities Available for Public Comment on 1/9/2004
BALTIMORE (January 9, 2004)
-- The public is invited to review and comment on regional transportation planning activities proposed for Fiscal Year 2005. The activities outlined in the draft FY 2005 Unified Planning Work Program (UPWP) are to be completed by staff of the Baltimore Metropolitan Council (BMC) on behalf of the Baltimore Regional Transportation Board (BRTB), local jurisdiction agencies and various state agencies between July 1, 2004, and June 30, 2005.

BRTB serves as the transportation planning and policy-making body for the Baltimore region, and has been formally designated as the metropolitan planning organization (MPO) for the Baltimore metropolitan area.

BMC is the organization of the region’s elected executives who are committed to identifying regional interests and developing collaborative strategies, plans and programs which will improve the quality of life and economic vitality throughout the region.  BMC staff provide technical and staff support to the BRTB.

The activities funded in the UPWP are supported primarily through federal dollars.  Public participation is extremely beneficial in making sound decisions. Transportation affects most of us every single day so your input is crucial.

A sample of the activities listed in this document include tasks to support:

  • Public participation in the transportation planning process
  • Systems to monitor and evaluate congestion
  • Alternative transportation (bicycle and pedestrian) needs
  • Strategies to improve mass transit
  • Transportation needs of the elderly, individuals with disabilities and low-income residents
  • Safety and efficiency of the transportation system
  • Minority and low-income groups’ involvement in transportation planning
  • Environmental planning for air and water quality
  • Assessment of land development actions with transportation needs
The draft FY 2005 UPWP is available on the BMC website (www.baltometro.org) under "What’s New".  Hard copies are available at all local planning offices.
