BRTB Seeks Input on "Cleaner Greener" Transit Projects
Baltimore Regional Transportation Board Seeks Input on "Cleaner Greener" Transit Projects
BALTIMORE (December 23, 2010) – The Maryland Transit Administration, is requesting to amend the Transportation Improvement Program for three projects in Baltimore City. These projects strive to be "Cleaner and Greener" by increasing energy efficiency of bus maintenance facilities and replacing bus diesel engines to reduce emissions. The $15.1 million in funding for these projects comes from a number of federal grants.
Comments on these proposed projects are welcome through Tuesday, January 18, 2011.
- BUSH STREET MAINTENANCE SHOP PROJECT: $12 million grant to replace the existing 103-year old bus maintenance facility at 1300 Bush Street with a new "green" environmentally friendly facility
This improvement would increase the capacity for the MTA to perform major maintenance on their fleet of 737 buses, as well as allow additional space for staging some of MTA’s articulated buses. Due to its design and age, it is not possible to expand the existing building.
- BUS WASH REPLACEMENT: $1.7 million grant to install 11 new energy efficient and environmentally friendly bus wash systems across four MTA maintenance divisions
These new bus wash systems will replace the current 15-year-old systems, and will preserve and protect MTA’s bus fleet, including 140 new hybrid buses.
- BUS DIESEL ENGINE REPLACEMENT: $1.4 million grant to replace 30 diesel engines with more energy efficient and environmentally friendly units
The new engines are fully compliant with EPA 2007 emissions requirements and will significantly reduce the emissions of nitrous oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM), hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO).
Information about the proposed projects is available at www.baltometro.org.
The public review period will extend through Tuesday, January 18, 2011.
