Baltimore Region Surpassed 1 Million Households
BALTIMORE REGION SURPASSED 1 MILLION HOUSEHOLDS IN THE LAST DECADE
BALTIMORE (February 10, 2011) – Data from the 2010 Census, released yesterday, indicates that the Baltimore region grew to more than 1 million households (occupied housing units) during the last decade. The Census data show that Howard County experienced the most rapid growth in households at 16.3 percent, followed by Carroll and Harford counties, with gains of 13.9 percent and 13.2 percent respectively. Anne Arundel County posted an 11.6 percent gain, while Baltimore County households increased by 5.6 percent and Baltimore City lost 3.1 percent of its households.
The total population for Baltimore City and Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford and Howard counties grew from 2.51 million in 2000 to 2.66 million, a change of 6 percent. As with household growth, Howard County experienced the most rapid population growth in the region, at 15.8 percent, while Baltimore City’s population declined by about 30,000 residents, the smallest decline since the 1960 census.

6 The population under 18 declined in all but Howard and Anne Arundel counties, where there were gains of 7.4 and 1.2 percent respectively. Overall, there was a 3.8 percent decline in the under-18 population throughout the region.
Echoing what happened at the state level, the Baltimore region grew more diverse in the last decade. The Hispanic/Latino population more than doubled in five of the six jurisdictions in the region, and nearly tripled in Carroll County. The Asian population also more than doubled in Carroll and Howard counties.

The Baltimore Metropolitan Council (BMC) is preparing a series of maps showing total population, population change, race and Hispanic heritage, distribution of households, and population under 18.
