Baltimore City and MTA Propose Amendments to the 2012-15 Baltimore Region Transportation Improvement Program

BALTIMORE (January 5, 2011) -  Members of the public have until January 23 to comment on projects that Baltimore City and the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) propose to add to the 2012-2015 Baltimore Region Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). Details about these projects are listed below.

Baltimore City is proposing the following projects:

Annapolis Road and Waterview Avenue bridges and Maisel Street pedestrian bridge over the BW Parkway

These bridges are reaching the end of their useful life and safe operation. This project will ensure connectivity and safe operating conditions for communities in South Baltimore.

The Baltimore City Department of Transportation is collaborating with the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts to incorporate an aesthetic design into the new bridges. The Request for Qualifications (RFQ) can be found on the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts web site.

Highlandtown Transit Streetscape
Baltimore City has received a Federal Transit Administration grant to provide improvements along Eastern Avenue in the neighborhood of Highlandtown. This project will provide safety and aesthetic improvements including:

  • Curb extensions to improve pedestrian safety,
  • Landscaping,
  • Bicycle parking, and
  • Real-time transit displays at bus shelters.

This project helps to implement Baltimore City's Southeast Complete Streets Plan, a long-range guide to improving the safety, livability and aesthetics of city streets while accommodating all transportation modes. More information about the Plan can be found on Baltimore City's Orange Cone Blog.

The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA), proposes changing the way funding is displayed for four existing projects, advancing two older projects into the 2012-15 TIP, and adding two new projects.

The projects currently in the 2012-15 TIP which will display changes in funding are:

  • Bus & Rail System Preservation and Improvement
  • Light Rail Mid-Life Overhaul
  • Bus Replacement
  • Metro Railcar Overhaul

The two projects that have been included in a previous TIP are:

  • Howard Street Revitalization
  • PA/LED Sign Replacement for LRT and Metro

The new projects being proposed for the 2012-15 TIP are:

  • Northern Police Facility Relocation
  • MARC Edgewood Station Improvements

The public is invited to review and comment on all these proposed amendments through Monday, January 23, 2012.

A public meeting to answer questions and accept comments on these amendments is scheduled for Thursday, January 12, 2012, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Southeast Anchor Library.
