Baltimore Regional Safety Subcommittee
BackgroundThe Baltimore Regional Transportation Board (BRTB) approved the formation of a regional safety subcommittee on January 22, 2008 to coordinate the implementation of the Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) in the Baltimore region.
The SHSP is a requirement under SAFETEA-LU (Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users) aimed at reducing the number of crashes, injuries, and fatalities through a process that relies on accurate and timely data, consultation with safety stakeholders, and performance based goals that address infrastructure and behavioral safety problems on all public roads.
The State of Maryland held a leadership summit on November 30, 2007 to seek help in implementing the SHSP at the regional level through regional programs and activities. From this summit, the Baltimore region developed a regional safety plan to be implemented under the guidance and leadership of the Metropolitan Planning Organization. Purpose/Mission
The purpose of the regional safety committee is to meet on a regular basis to monitor progress on the SHSP implementation in the Baltimore region and to develop plans and programs using the MPO leadership to raise safety awareness in the region.
Who we are
The committee is made up of safety stakeholders from each of the jurisdictions and state agencies representing the 4 E’s – Engineering, Education, Enforcement, and Emergency Medical Services.
Meeting Time and Location
Meetings are held quarterly, from 10 a.m. to noon, at the offices of the Baltimore Metropolitan Council. View the Calendar of Events for the next scheduled meeting or Minutes for summaries of prior meetings.
