The Region in Relief (Metropolitan Report, v3 #4)

Winter 2002-03

The Region in Relief

Relief map of Baltimore regionAs one of its 10th Anniversary activities, BMC refurbished a topographic map created by staff of the Regional Planning Council, BMC’s predecessor organization, in the late 1960s. The map, which measures roughly six feet by six feet, was built to a scale of approximately one inch to one mile.

The Liberty, Loch Raven and PrettyBoy reservoirs are easy to identify, as are the Patapsco, Patuxent, Potomac, Gunpowder, Susquehanna, Magothy and Severn rivers. The Jones Falls Valley that bisects Baltimore City is also readily apparent.

Baltimore artist Craig Herron repainted the map to highlight topographic features and show rivers, streams and reservoirs. Gould Charshee, BMC’s Water Quality Coordinator, and Larry Klimovitz, Director of Finance and Human Resources, built a wooden frame to showcase and hang the map. The refurbished map is mounted on the wall opposite BMC’s main conference room. Be sure to check it out the next time you stop by to visit.
