New Transportation Plan to Focus on Cyclists, Pedestrians
For the first time, the Baltimore Regional Transportation Board is preparing a plan for bicycles, pedestrians and greenways in the Baltimore region. In developing the plan, both recreational and transportation issues are being considered. The final plan, which is scheduled for completion in June, 2001, will include recommendations for both new and improved facilities, and policy issues.
The BRTB recently held two regional forums for invited local government, business and community leaders to explore the issues and generate support for the plan.
A bicycle/pedestrian forum was held on October 10. Dan Burden of Walkable Communities facilitated a dialogue about the importance of bicycling and walking as part of building livable communities.
The session featured a panel with Secretary of Planning Harriet Tregoning, Dr. Andrea Gielen of the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, real estate developer Bill Struever, and Harvey Muller of the State Highway Administration. Discussion topics included transportation, public health, community design and economic development.
A forum on greenways was held on October 26. Marianne Kreitner, aide to Congressman Ben Cardin gave introductory remarks. Chuck Flink of Greenways, Incorporated, facilitated the discussion.
Public meetings will be held in the coming months to solicit community input and support for bicycle and pedestrian facilities.
