In this addition of On Transit, we bring to your attention some exciting happenings around the region. One is next week, one is next month, one was last year, and the last two are underway. Read on and be informed with On Transit.
Baltimore Region Coordinated Transportation Planning Forum  
ForumBRTB and MTA Co-Sponsor March 26 Event
 
The Baltimore Regional Transportation Board and the Maryland Transit Administration invite you to participate in the development of a coordinated transportation plan for the region that will guide funding decisions for three Federal Transit Administration programs.
 
Please join the BRTB and the MTA on March 26, 2007 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Techcenter@UMBC, located adjacent to the University of Maryland - Baltimore County.  We ask that you confirm your participation in the forum via e-mail at llryden@kfhgroup.com or by calling 301-951-8660.

MTA's Ridership Increases in 2006  
MTA logoNational Trend Holds True for Maryland
 
MTA's overall ridership increased nearly two percent from 91,537,624 riders in FY 2005 to 93,278,512 riders in FY 2006. 
Transit Mode Percent Increase
Mobility Paratransit   19% 
Light Rail  11%
MARC Train   6%
Commuter Bus 5%
Local bus slightly
Metro Subway slightly

Nationally, Americans took 10.1 billion trips on public transportation nationwide in 2006. This was an average increase of 2.9 percent.  Since 1995, transit ridership has increased 30 percent. 

 
Change is in on the Way for Howard Transit

       Start April 2
 
The new and improved Howard Transit hits the streets April 2. For the first two days, "customers are invited to ride Howard Transit for 'peanuts' on April 2 and 3, when all rides will be just 25 cents and each passenger will get a complimentary bag of candy peanuts."
 
Improvements include routes to new areas of the County, earlier and later service hours on some routes and half-hour frequency on routes serving Columbia Mall, Howard County General Hospital, Howard Community College and several of the Columbia village centers.

ARTMA Promotes Commuting for Anne Arundel County  
Commute CampaignARTMA's New Campaign 
 
The Annapolis Regional Transportation Management Association recently started a "Commuting Made Easy" campaign for Anne Arundel County residents. The purpose of the campaign is to promote transportation alternatives to the single occupant vehicle. For more information, check out their web site at www.artma.org.

New Legislative Weekly Report Now AvailableBMC's Weekly Legislative Report
 

The Baltimore Metropolitan Council provides timely reports to the public on the status of legislation introduced in the Maryland General Assembly.

 

These Weekly Legislative Reports provide up-to-date information on the status of transportation, air quality and community development-related legislation introduced in the General Assembly.  Each report includes details such as the bill number, sponsors, legislative history, hearing dates, and current status.
