| MTA RED LINE SEEKING
MEMBERS FOR NEW STATION AREA ADVISORY COMMITTEES |
|
Nominations welcome
through August 25
The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) has announced the creation of
Station Area Advisory Committees, or SAACs. Their purpose will be to ensure that
stations, and the areas around them, truly enhance the communities they are in
and make a safe environment for Red Line riders. SAACs will include community
stakeholders (station area residents, businesses, churches, organizations, and
institutions). These committees will decide station locations, choose
designs that reflect each station's unique character, ensure that stations
support community plans and visions, address new traffic patterns, and name
station stops. SAAC members will also work to make sure that people can easily
bike and walk to stations and feel safe at night. Nominations will be
accepted until August 25, 2010. Committees will begin meeting during the Fall of
2010 and will meet every 4 to 6 weeks for approximately 15 months.

BILLION IN TRANSPORTATION IMPROVEMENTS |
|
What do you
think? Comments welcome through June 22
Just over $1 billion in transportation projects
and improvements are being proposed in the Draft 2011-2014 Transportation
Improvement Program (TIP) for the Baltimore region, recently released for
review. A corresponding conformity report regarding the impact of the proposed
projects on the air quality of the Baltimore region is also available for review
and comment.
What's in the Draft TIP?
-
Transit improvements
include MARC parking expansion at the Aberdeen station, mid-life overhaul of
Light Rail and Metro vehicles and replacement buses for MTA and the local bus
systems.
-
Projects that benefit biking
and walking include: North Avenue Streetscape, improvements to the
neighborhood around the West Baltimore MARC station, and the reconstruction,
with bike compatible features, of the US 40 bridge over the Patapsco River and
US 1 bridge over the Little Gunpowder Falls.
-
Bridge and highway
preservation represent approximately 61% of the funding in this draft TIP.
Examples include the addition of one lane northbound on US 29 between Seneca
Drive and MD 175 and an extension of Danville Street in a former CSX
right-of-way to support freight movement near the Port.
Let the Baltimore Regional Transportation Board know what you think about the
conformity report and these proposed projects at a public meeting on June 8
or share your thoughts online. Comments are welcome through Tuesday, June
22.

CMTA
HIRES NEW PRESIDENT/CEO
|
|
Central
Maryland Transportation Alliance Hires Michele Whelley
CMTA is a coalition of area business and nonprofit
leaders dedicated to improving travel efficiency within Central Maryland. After
a three month nationwide search, Michele Whelley was selected because of her
unique experience and skills. A former president of the Downtown Partnership of
Baltimore with substantial economic development experience returns to Maryland
to take over the position formerly held by Otis Rolley III.
"Under Whelley's leadership, the Transportation Alliance will focus on three
major initiatives: advancing TOD as the priority for physical development
projects in the region, working with regional and state partners to advance the
Baltimore Regional Rail Transit Plan beyond the Red Line to additional routes,
and improving the quality and efficiency of the Maryland Transit Administration
through the use of a MTA report card."
