$1 BILLION IN TRANSPORTATION IMPROVEMENTS
What do you think? Four year transportation program open for review through June 22
Just over $1 billion in transportation projects and improvements are being proposed in the Draft 2011-2014 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) for the Baltimore region, recently released for review.
The draft TIP contains a list of transportation priorities and projects for which federal funding will be requested over the next 4 years. Projects are drawn from recommendations in the long-range transportation plan.
An air quality report regarding the impact of the proposed projects on the Baltimore region is also available for review and comment.
What's in the Draft TIP?
  • Bridges and highways - Approximately 62% of the projects are for these types of projects. Examples include the addition of one lane northbound on US 29 between Seneca Drive and MD 175; an extension of Danville Street in a former CSX right-of-way to support freight movement near the Port; and many bridge rehabilitations, including bridges at Stone Chapel, Dogwood, Gunpowder, and Hess Roads.
  • Projects that benefit biking and walking including: North Avenue Streetscape, improvements to the neighborhood around the West Baltimore MARC station, and the reconstruction, with bike compatible features, of the US 40 bridge over the Patapsco River and US 1 bridge over the Little Gunpowder Falls.
  • Transit improvements include MARC parking expansion at the Aberdeen station, mid-life overhaul of Light Rail and Metro vehicles and replacement buses for MTA and the local bus systems.
Let the Baltimore Regional Transportation Board (BRTB) know what you think about these proposed projects at a public meeting on Tuesday, June 8 or share your thoughts in writing.  Comments are welcome through Tuesday, June 22.
MTA SEEKS MEMBERS FOR STATION ADVISORY COMMITTEES

The MD Transit Administration (MTA) has announced the creation of Station Area Advisory Committees, or SAACs. Their purpose will be to ensure that stations-and the areas around them-truly enhance the communities they are in and make a safe environment for Red Line riders. Further, the Red Line Community Compact states that teams must represent the neighborhoods they serve. Therefore, SAACs will include community stakeholders (station area residents, businesses, churches, organizations, and institutions).

These committees will decide station locations, choose designs that reflect each station's unique character, ensure that stations support community plans and visions, address new traffic patterns, and name station stops. SAAC members will also work to make sure that people can easily bike and walk to stations and feel safe at night.

Committees will begin Fall 2010 and will meet every 4 to 6 weeks for approximately 15 months. Nominations will be accepted until August 25, 2010.
B'MORE INVOLVED: HAVE YOUR SAY!
Take a few minutes to share your thoughts about biking in the region or the future...

How's cycling in Harford County?
As part of an effort to make Harford County a more bike friendly place to ride, the Harford County Department of Community Services, Harford Commuter Assistance Program, the Harford County Department of Planning and Zoning, and Healthy Harford, a nonprofit 501c3 dedicated to helping make Harford County the healthiest community in Maryland, are conducting a survey on cycling behavior. The data gathered from this survey will be used during the upcoming development of the County's Bicycle & Pedestrian Master Plan.
