The following newsflash from the Baltimore Regional Transportation Board details current news, events, etc. in regards to biking and walking both in and around the Baltimore region. The information found in the newsflash is informative; it could inspire some to become more involved in the process of improving conditions for biking and walking. Or it could inspire a bike-ride or a walk... BikePedED
Between 7:00 and 8:30 a.m. on May 18, bicycle commuters throughout the
Baltimore region will converge on four locations:
Registered participants will receive an event t-shirt, an on-the-go snack with java, and the chance to win bike accessories. With temperatures forecasted to be average over the upcoming weeks, the weather should be beautiful - with temperatures in the morning in the low 60s, and temperatures in the afternoon in the upper 70s. Bike to Work Day promotes a "clean commute" and kicks off Clean Commute Month in the Baltimore region. May is the beginning of the ground-level ozone season, when we hear about Code Red and Orange Ozone Action Days. On those days, the air is dangerous to breathe - especially for the young and for the elderly. Single occupancy vehicles produce 20% of the dangerous ozone-emission pollution in the Baltimore area. Bike commuting can improve the air we breathe.
In Copenhagen, people bike while pregnant, carrying two cups of coffee,
smoking and or eating bananas. Flat, compact and temperate, the Netherlands and
Denmark have long been havens for bikers. In Amsterdam, 40% of commuters get to
work by bike. In Copenhagen, more than a third of workers pedal to their
offices. But as concern about global warming intensifies -- the European Union
is already under emissions caps and tougher restrictions are expected -- the
countries are leading a fresh assault on the car culture. A major thrust is a
host of aggressive new measures designed to shift bike commuting into higher
gear, including increased prison time for bike thieves and the construction of
new parking facilities that can hold up to 10,000 bikes.
The National Transportation Enhancements Clearinghouse has published an
updated guide to Transportation Enhancements (TE). The guide focuses on 15
excellent examples of TE projects from around the nation. Projects range in size
from a $21 million award for scenic preservation along the California coast to a
$14,000 award funding archeological research into the early transportation
system in western North Carolina.
Tour dem Parks is a major fundraising event focused on supporting groups and
organizations dedicated to improving Baltimore's Park system. The event provides
friends and families with an opportunity to ride together and discover
little-known treasures in the city.
Following the ride will be a Festival and Celebration in Carroll Park with a Barbecue and Live Music. The first 300 participants (and possibly more) get a free t-shirt and water bottle.
The Baltimore Regional Transportation Board has released a first draft list
of projects submitted for the FY 2008-2012 Transportation Improvement Program.
The TIP is a list of transportation priorities and projects that are requesting
federal funding over the next 5 years.
