Shovel less bike more, Bike to Work Day is coming!
Just as predicted!  There was at least six more weeks of winter since Punxsutawney Phil had his say.  However, don't worry, now it's time for folks to get ready to ride their bikes to work, walk to transit, walk to school, and just walk for the health of it.

The following newsflash, on behalf of, the Baltimore Regional Transportation Board details upcoming news and events in regards to biking and walking both in and around the Baltimore region.

Thank you and Enjoy!

Bike to Work Day - Friday, May 21, 2010
REGISTRATION NOW OPEN FOR BIKE TO WORK DAY!
Pencil in May 21st on your calendar

The 13th annual Bike to Work Day (B2WD), hosted by the members of the Baltimore Metropolitan Council (BMC), will be held on Friday, May 21, 2010.  Registration is now open!

At the rally site, riders will receive a free t-shirt, be entered to win prizes (including a folding bike), a "Bike to Benefits" card, and a Bicycle Commuter Guide for Employees and Employers.

New in 2010!
Our goal this year is to reach new bicycle commuters, as well as those who typically commute by bike and have attended a rally site in previous years. Here are a few of the new initiatives this year:

  • A Bike and Benefit rewards card provides incentives from bike friendly businesses (more info on this in the following article)

  • Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) will host rallies at APG and in Edgewood
Satellite rallies are also being scheduled at University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and Sinai Hospital.

  • Bicycle mentors are available in every jurisdiction

  • Rideshare Coordinators wll be on hand to help you make multi-modal commuting connections.

Regional B2WD 2010 sponsors include PNC Bank and the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN). PNC's Harbor East Branch will distribute drawstring backpacks (while supplies last) by sponsoring "Pedal to PNC" through BMC's Bike to Benefits reward card.  MASN's "Tune in on Wednesday's" will include public service announcements promoting B2WD.  If you are interested in being a sponsor for B2WD please contact BMC's Stephanie Yanovitz at syanovitz@baltometro.org.

You don't have to wait until B2W Day to start commuting by bike, transit, carpool, or walking! Information and help is always available on BMC's web site.

NEW REPORT IDENTIFIES PROGRESS ON BENCHMARKS
Includes important data on bicycling and walking in all 50 states and 51 largest U.S. cities

2010 Benchmarking Report CoverThe Alliance for Biking and Walking has released the Bicycling and Walking in the United States 2010 Benchmarking Report. A highlight from the reports conclusion is listed below:
"As this report shows, where bicycling and walking levels are higher, obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes levels are lower. Higher levels of bicycling and walking also coincide with increased bicycle and pedestrian safety and higher levels of physical activity.

Increasing bicycling and walking can help solve many of the largest problems facing our nation. As this report indicates, many states and cities are making progress toward promoting safe access for bicyclists and pedestrians, but much more remains to be done."
