A Regional Bike and
Pedestrian Newsflash
The following
monthly newsflash from the Baltimore Regional Transportation Board details
current news and events in regards to biking and walking both in and around the
Baltimore region.
The information found in the newsflash is informative;
it could inspire some to become more involved in the process of improving
conditions for biking and walking.
There is much to enjoy for everyone in this newsletter. There is always
plenty of information and resources available but the BMC tries to make all that
information just as enjoyable as riding a bike or taking a walk.
You may peruse the newsletter highlights below but be careful not
to miss anything.
Thank you, and Enjoy!

Please pass on my
thanks to everyone who organized the bike to work day. We were given nice
gifts, food, and water. I commute to work as much as possible, but usually by
myself. I hooked up with people who I did not know, and we biked to our the
areas of work. I usually bike the roads, because I am comfortable with cars, and
the road feels nice on the backside. The group with whom I was, travels by
paths, which I have little use for because they take extra miles and time, but
it was fun this morning to see things, that
I had not previously seen, although
I will continue to use the roads. The group that I was with was 6, and I could
not help being more happy that 6 cars were not on the road this morning. We
left the Columbia Mall for our rally point.

A
reminder less than 12 hours before the event? This should have been sent out a week prior with follow
ups later in the week. I tried finding update info and couldn't find anything.
Ah well, maybe next year.

Very nice
event, organization, facility, refreshment...good job. Alan D.

It was a perfect early morning,
relatively few cars making the ride in quite easy. I dropped my car off 10 miles
from work for an oil change and rode in as I do on such days. The event in
Annapolis was wonderful, nice crowd, good presentations, great spirit and energy in the air, and really
appreciated all the businesses supporting the event. Heather of ARTMA is a star,
and deserves one too. My only complaint? My ride was too quick, felt too short!
Next year I'll plan to double the distance and ride from home for a nice hour
long cruise into town. Take good care, thank you again, Sincerely,
Peter

ONE LESS
CAR's Tour Du Port Early-bird registration deadline
approaching
Support
One Less Car (OLC)
Tour Du Port is on
Sunday October 4th this year. There are rides for all ages and abilities
ranging from 12 to 51 miles. Tour Du Port is OLC's Annual Fundraiser so it
needs your support.
On a
personal note.... Carol Silldorff, Executive Director OLC, is a real
fighter when it comes to dealing with personal injury and mental fatigue. She
has gotten a lot of support from fellow riders and friends since an
unfortunate bicycling crash where she struck a deer followed by landing in an
oncoming lane of traffic. Crashes like that always leave us at a loss for words
but we can always show our support indirectly.
Sign up for Tour Du Port by August 15th for $35, after August 15th it's
$45.

Street Smart Campaign coming in
September....
 Statewide in 2007 there
were a total of 615 lives lost and 51,729 persons injured in 588 fatal crashes
and 34,866 injury crashes (totaling 35,424 crashes). Another 65,519 crahses
were property damage only (PDO) for a total of 100,943 reported crashes with the
possibility of even more injuries unknown or unreported.
Statewide 110 lives lost were pedestrians and 2,667 pedestrians were
injured, in a total of 2,928 crashes. Statewide 7 Bicyclist lives were loss and
another 662 injured in a total of 809 bicyclist involved crahses.
In our Baltimore region we represent 39% of the toal fatalities and more
than half the crashes and injuries across the state.
Street Smart is aimed to target local law enforcement to locations where
enforcement can raise the awareness of the rights and responsibilities of
drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists to look out for one another on the roadway.
Drivers should stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. Pedestrians should use
crosswalks, obey signals and cross at intersections. Learning to be Street
Smart reminds us of the importance to use crosswalks, obey signals and Share the
Road before it's too late.
In 2007 in the Baltimore
region:
-
237 lives were lost
-
25,004 people were injured
-
52,898 crashes were reported
-
50 pedestrians lost their lives
-
2 bicyclists died
