Back to school is upon us.  Please use extra caution around driveways and intersections where you can predict children will be unpredictable.

Most crashes occur from 4 to 8 p.m. When people are stuck in rush hour traffic, their behavior can become more aggressive, especially when they have to be somewhere on time.  In addition, sun glare and change in daylight hours all become contributing factors in crashes this time of year.

Share these safety activities with students of all ages.

DRIVE LIKE THEIR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT! BE STREET SMART

Street Smart - www.drivesafebaltimore.com

In the three-year period between 2006 and 2008, there were 7,135 crashes involving bicycles and pedestrians in the Baltimore region, resulting in 157 deaths.  That represents 39% percent of all bike/pedestrian crashes and fatalities in the entire state of Maryland.

In an effort to reduce highway carnage, human suffering and economic loss in the region, the Baltimore Regional Transportation Board (BRTB) endorsed the Street Smart pedestrian and bicycle safety campaign.

"Street Smart reminds everyone who uses our streets and roads - drivers, pedestrians and cyclists alike - that they need to know and practice the rules of the road," said Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.

Street Smart - www.drivesafebaltimore.comBe Street Smart
  • Pedestrians:  Cross at corners or designated cross walks and obey traffic signals.
  • Cyclists: Remember you are operating vehicles and are subject to stop signs, traffic signals and one-way streets, just as drivers are.
  • Drivers: Pedestrians have the right of way at stop signs; when passing a bicycle, you are required to allow a three-foot buffer.
  • Everyone: Exercise common sense and common courtesy.
You can help save a life!  Spread the word about the importance of being Street Smart!
Visit the online resource center for downloadable signs, banners, images, and more.  Then, share the Street Smart
message with your neighbors and coworkers, post a message on your blog, or share our page on Facebook or Twitter. And most importantly, the next time you are out and about, remember to be Street Smart!
IN THE NEWS, EVENTS, AND OTHER USEFUL LINKS

While there is always lots of news and events to share, places to go and things to do, there may also at times unfortunately be the news of the loss of a bicyclist in the region.  While bicycling on the road or off-road on a trail, this is a reminder to not take a moment for granted when bicycling.

IN THE NEXT ISSUE

October's BikePed Beacon will provide further updates on the Baltimore Region's 2007 Pedestrian and Greenway Transportation Plan.
