BRTB SEEKS INPUT ON SPENDING STIMULUS FUNDS |
Public comments welcome through July 20
|
The
Baltimore Regional Transportation Board (BRTB) has
approximately $20 million to spend on local transportation
projects in the Baltimore region.
These funds, allocated through the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act of 2009, are to be used on "shovel-ready"
projects that will put people to work and help stimulate the
local economy. The BRTB welcomes comments from the public
through July 20.
Eligible projects include such activities as the
resurfacing, reconstruction and rehabilitation of county
roads; ADA compliance projects; and intersection
improvements. These kinds of "fix-it-first" projects will
improve safety and traffic flow, and allow the benefits of
the stimulus program to be felt by workers and families
throughout the region. The proposed projects are submitted
as an amendment to the 2008-2012 Transportation
Improvement Program (TIP).
A list of proposed projects is available at the Regional
Information Center at 2700 Lighthouse Point East, Suite
310, Baltimore. PDF files of the proposed projects are
also available online using the link below. Please note
that stimulus projects for Baltimore City were included in
a previous amendment and are not listed again.

"TRANSIT AROUND THE NATION" FILM SCREENING |
July 8th film
screening to be followed by panel discussion
|
Last
fall, the City of Baltimore, Maryland Transit Administration,
and Central Maryland Transportation Alliance sponsored 60
neighborhood activists, elected leaders, developers and city
officials who traveled to Los Angeles, Phoenix, Portland and
Seattle. They went with a mission: to learn more about how
transit projects impact communities and businesses as well as
to bring back lessons on how to best build the Red Line.
In a series of jam-packed tours, these Baltimoreans spoke
directly with residents about how communities were affected,
and witnessed firsthand light rail projects under
construction. Along the way, members from each delegation were
interviewed about their reactions to the projects.
These stories and more have been compiled into a
short documentary film entitled "Transit Around the
Nation: Exploring Possibilities for Baltimore's Red Line,"
which will be shown on Wednesday, July 8, 2009
from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in Wheeler Auditorium at the Central
Branch of Enoch Pratt Free Library (400 N. Cathedral Street,
Baltimore).

CHARM CITY CIRCULATOR BEGINS SERVICE THIS SUMMER |
|
Free downtown
circulator bus and free water taxi service, too! |
|
 Beginning
in late summer 2009, the Charm City Circulator will be
your way to connect to work, shopping, restaurants,
attractions, transit hubs, and parking facilities in
downtown Baltimore.
This new, FREE bus service will operate 3 routes
in-and-around downtown Baltimore, 7 days a week, with a 10
minute frequency. Additionally, all buses in the fleet
will be EcoSaver IV model hybrid buses, which emit far
less pollution than conventional buses. The Charm City
Circulator will connect existing transit hubs such as
Pennsylvania Station with the light rail, MARC, subway,
and water taxi.
New! Officials
also recently launched a new, FREE, water taxi service -
the Water Taxi Harbor Connector - that will operate daily
along the Inner Harbor. The first route opened in May and
runs every 15 minutes from Tide Point Business Park in
Locust Point to the Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers
Maritime Museum in Fells Point. Later this summer, a
second route will run from the Canton Waterfront Park to
Tide Point.

AVOID THE TRAFFIC - TAKE TRANSIT THIS SUMMER!
|
Take transit to summer festivals, concerts, games, and
more. You'll help keep our air clean and avoid traffic
headaches!
|
Whether
you're going downtown for 4th of July fireworks or heading to
the African-American Heritage Festival, Artscape, the Maryland
State Fair, or one of Baltimore's many great festivals,
consider leaving the car at home and taking transit.
You can even take local transit to events such as the
Columbia Lakefront Festival and the Annapolis Art Walk, or to
see a movie at local malls such as Arundel Mills Mall and
Columbia Mall.
