2009 MARYLAND TRANSPORTATION PLAN NOW AVAILABLE 
Plan outlines vision, performance goals, and objectives
 
2009 MD Transportation PlanOn January 21, 2009, the MD Department of Transportation released the 2009 Maryland Transportation Plan (MTP).  The MTP establishes a 20-year vision for transportation in the State and helps to guide statewide improvements across all means of transportation, including highways, roads, tunnels, bridges, rail, buses, water ports, airports, bike paths, and sidewalks. 

The MTP also includes goals and objectives that address all methods of transportation and respond to critical issues such as:
  • How MDOT can best serve Maryland's residents, businesses, and visitors;
  • Safety, which is the State's highest commitment to its customers;
  • Maintenance and preservation of transportation infrastructure;
  • Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and a coordinated response to climate change; and
  • Providing mobility choices for the efficient movement of people and goods.

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY DEVELOPMENT PLAN OPEN FOR REVIEW
Public forums to accept comment scheduled for this week and next
 
Anne Arundel County's General Development Plan - 2008Anne Arundel County has recently released a new Draft General Development Plan (GDP), open for public review through February 16, 2009. 

The GDP is a comprehensive land use plan that establishes policies and recommendations to guide land use decisions over the 10 to 20 year planning horizon.

In an effort to accept public comments, a series of public forums are being held.  The next meetings are: 

  • Thursday, February 5 at Meade High School (1100 Clark R., Ft. Meade)
  • Wednesday, February 11 at North County High School (10 East First Ave., Glen Burnie)
All forums are held in the school cafeteria and will run from 6 to 9 p.m.

Public comments on the draft plan may be submitted in writing or via e-mail to GDP2008@aacounty.org through February 16, 2009. 
NEIGHBORHOOD GRANTS NOW AVAILABLE
Application workshops February 4, 9, and 11
 
Baltimore Community FoundationThe Baltimore Community Foundation's neighborhood Grants Program has funds available for grants of up to $10,000 to assist resident driven and led community groups with an active, engaged resident base, to design, develop and carry out projects in communities in Baltimore City and Baltimore County.

Application workshops will be held Monday, February 9 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and Wednesday, February 11 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. at 2 East Read St. (8th floor, Levi Conference Room) in Baltimore City. Attendance at an application workshop is required in order to apply for grants.

In addition, a pre-application workshop will be held on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at 6 p.m. at the Baltimore Community Foundation for organizations who would like to receive technical assistance. This workshop is not mandatory, but could increase the success of the grant application.

TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT SUMMIT NOW FEBRUARY 24
Summit rescheduled after inclement weather
 
Transit oriented developmentDue to inclement weather, the 2nd Transit Oriented Development Summit has been rescheduled to Tuesday, February 24, 2009 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Thumel Business Center Auditorium (11 W. Mount Royal Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21201). 

The summit will include speakers from the Maryland Department of Transportation, Central Maryland Transportation Alliance, and Reconnecting America. Topics to be discussed include Central Maryland's opportunities and challenges for TOD, new initiatives and advances in local TOD planning, and an emerging national agenda to promote smart investment in infrastructure and innovation.

The event is free and open to the public and is accessible by MTA Bus Lines 3, 11, 21, 61, 64, Light Rail and MARC Train.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO SUBMITTED COMMENTS ON THE TRANSPORTATION OUTLOOK 2035 DRAFT AMENDMENT
BRTB reviewing comments, will consider approval at February 24 meeting

Transportation Outlook 2035The BRTB would like to thank all those who submitted comments on the draft preferred alternative for the amendment to the Baltimore region's long-range transportation plan, Transportation Outlook 2035: Creating a Blueprint for the Baltimore Region's Future.

This draft preferred alternative proposes $225 million in funding for regional transit projects, beginning in the year 2020.

The BRTB is currently reviewing all comments submitted and will consider approval of the amendment at their next board meeting on Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at 9 a.m. at the BMC offices located at 2700 Lighthouse Point East, Suite 310, Baltimore, MD 21224.  A public participation opportunity is offered at the beginning of the meeting.

Commuter Choice MarylandThe Maryland Transit Administration's (MTA) Commuter Choice Maryland Program is hosting a series of free breakfast meetings for employers featuring some of the state's top economic experts. The next session will be held on Thursday, February 26 from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Sheraton Hotel - BWI Business District.

NEW PA TO MD TRANSIT SERVICE LAUNCHED THIS WEEK
Commuter bus service will run between York, PA and Timonium, MD
 
Rabbit Transit logoOn February 2nd, rabbittransit launched a new commuter bus route from York, PA to Timonium/Hunt Valley. 

Rabbit Transit Express Commuter BusThe service offers 3 trips each way daily, Monday through Friday and stops at any MTA bus stop along the route. All buses are equipped with satellite TV, reclining seats, and bicycle storage. 

Riders who are registered and ride to work at least twice a week are eligible to receive free emergency rides home.

2009 POCKET GUIDE TO TRANSPORTATION AVAILABLE ONLINE
Guide offers data on transportation safety, security, environment
 
Pocket Guide to Transportation 2009The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), a part of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA), has released the print version of its latest pocket guide to transportation.  The pocket guide is designed as a quick reference on the changes in the U.S. transportation system since 1970.

The Pocket Guide is divided into five sections and a glossary that cover the extent and use of the transportation system and its impacts on safety and security, mobility, the economy, energy use, and the environment.
