COMM+UNITY WORKSHOP THIS SATURDAY ON ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE AND TRANSPORTATION
Hosted by Baltimore Region Environmental Justice In Transportation Project
Are you concerned about access to quality transit service? Pedestrian safety? Air pollution and congestion? Equity in the planning process?

If so, learn more about the Baltimore Region Environmental Justice In Transportation (BREJT) Project at a community workshop on Saturday, October 25, 2008. The event completes Phase II of this regional initiative.

Since 2003, the BREJT Project has been listening to low-income, minority communities describe the impact that transportation has on their environment and in their lives.

Efforts focused on the concerns of local residents, transit dependent and community leaders on four case studies throughout Baltimore: (1) Kirk Avenue Bus Yard (Midway Community); (2) Transit access (Cherry Hill); (3) Highway to Nowhere (West Baltimore) and (4) Public involvement and Pedestrian Safety (Lexington Market).

Attend the Comm+Unity Workshop to find out more
This workshop will provide an update to members of the community on the results of the four case studies, as well as provide attendees with information to use in their own communities.

BUILDING A NEW COMPREHENSIVE PLAN FOR ANNAPOLIS
Committee seeks public comment on draft
AnnapolisEvery 10 years, Annapolis creates a new Comprehensive Plan to chart the City's direction for the coming decade. Since late 2006, the City has been working with a Citizen Advisory Committee to generate a new Comprehensive Plan.

Now, the Comprehensive Plan Citizen Advisory Committee invites Annapolis residents, community groups, business groups and other interested individuals to review and comment on the "Committee Review Draft" of the Annapolis Comprehensive Plan. The committee wishes to hear from the public before it finishes its work on the Plan.

The Committee Review Draft is available for download on the City web site (link below) or for review at the Annapolis and Eastport-Annapolis Neck Libraries or the Annapolis Department of Planning and Zoning.

Comments about the plan may be submitted in person on Thursday, November 13, 2008 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Eastport Fire Station (916 Bay Ridge Avenue, Annapolis).  Written comments are due by November 10 and can be submitted to:

MTA HEARINGS ON MARC AND COMMUTER BUS CUTS
Proposed reductions in service a result of budget cuts
The sources of revenue that support the operation of MTA's MARC Train and Commuter Bus services have declined dramatically since the start of the fiscal year on July 1. Regrettably, MTA must reduce its budget, and while the majority of reductions are taking place in the administrative budget some MARC Train and Commuter Bus services are proposed for elimination.

The public is encouraged to provide input regarding the proposed modifications. MTA will hold public hearings throughout the State from November 17 through November 25, 2008 to receive public comments on these proposals. Citizens may provide comments at any hearing that is convenient, or may send comments directly to the MTA by mail or e-mail. All comments received by December 26, 2008 will be considered before proposals are finalized.

LOCAL TRANSPORTATION PROJECTS GO ON TOUR
Consolidated Transportation Program Details Future Transportation Projects
Maryland has a unique process to gather public input from every jurisdiction, a process stipulated by State law, requiring the Secretary of Transportation to visit with, and present to each of the State's jurisdictions, the Draft Consolidated Transportation Program (CTP), for comment.  This process is known as the Secretary's Annual Capital Program Tour.

The CTP is a detailed listing with descriptions of the capital projects that are proposed for construction, or for development and evaluation during the next six-year period.
MDOT Consolidated Transportation Program
Each year this report is developed in draft form and presented to every jurisdiction during the fall. Following distribution of the draft document, Maryland Department of Transportation representatives visit each jurisdiction both to present and to receive comments on the program. Following the tour, the CTP is prepared in final form for presentation to the General Assembly in January.

TRANSPORTATION OUTLOOK 2035 AMENDMENT UPDATE
BRTB reviewing public input, determining next steps

Transportation Outlook 2035In response to public input and amid concerns about escalating costs, this past summer the BRTB determined that an additional $340 million in funds for capital expansion would be directed toward a combination of short- and long-term transit projects.

In order to determine what transit projects should be funded, the BRTB held a 30-day public input period to gather ideas and advice from the public about what kinds of transit projects they would like to see funded.

During the public input period, over 330 project ideas were submitted for the BRTB's consideration.

Comments and suggestions obtained from the the public review period have been posted on the Transportation Outlook 2035 web page. On this page, you can see the following two documents:
  • All public input received

  • Summary report of all project ideas submitted
