PUBLIC REVIEW CLOSES TUESDAY: FIRST DRAFT 2008-2012 TIP

The Baltimore Regional Transportation Board has released a first draft list of projects submitted for the FY 2008-2012 Transportation Improvement Program.

The TIP is a list of transportation priorities and projects that are requesting federal funding over the next 5 years.

Examples of projects listed in this database include:

  • Road resurfacing and bridge repairs, rehabilitation, and painting
  • Pedestrian overpasses near schools and the building of pedestrian/bicycle trails
  • Evaluation of current traffic command and control systems and the installation of new traffic signal detection systems
  • Funding for the New Freedom and Job Access and Reverse Commute Programs, assisting people with disabilities, seniors, and low-income individuals access to employment and other opportunities.

The full list of proposed projects can be viewed at: bmc.baltometro.org/tips_web. Visitors to the web site can review draft projects near their home or in the region. Included with the project descriptions are projected costs and a map showing the location of the project, if appropriate. Information on how to use the database is provided.

Public Review and Comment

A public review period will be held from April 27 to May 29, 2007. The public is invited to review and comment on the proposed projects.

The activities funded by the BRTB are supported primarily through federal dollars. Public participation is extremely beneficial in making sound decisions. Transportation affects most of us every single day, so public input is crucial. The public is encouraged to visit the TIP database and submit comments by Tuesday, May 29, 2007.

MEMORIAL DAY HOLIDAY MAY AFFECT TRANSIT SCHEDULES

If you plan on using transit on Memorial Day, be sure to check to see if there are any changes to the schedules.  Some providers are offering regular transit service, while others have reduced or modified schedules.

TRANSPORTATION OUTLOOK 2035 UPDATE

Planning continues on Transportation Outlook 2035 - the next long-range transportation plan for the Baltimore region.

Currently, local elected officials and area planners are busy identifying projects to be included in the plan. A first draft list of projects is now available online.

Transportation Outlook 2035 projects include transit, bicycle, pedestrian, and local road or highway projects. In addition, for the first time, "management and operations" projects are included in this list. These are projects such as signal timing or real-time traveler information that help the transportation system run smoothly and efficiently.

At this time there are also six regionally significant highway and transit projects on the list. Regionally significant projects are classified as critically important to all jurisdictions in the region.

CLEAN CAR CLINICS OFFER FREE VEHICLE INSPECTIONS

The Baltimore Metropolitan Council has joined with the Maryland Department of the Environment and Precision Tune Auto Care to sponsor a series of Clean Car Clinics.

The Clean Car Clinics offer area drivers a chance to get a FREE vehicle inspection to ensure that passenger vehicles are operating efficiently and cleanly.

Regular maintenance can make a big difference in how much a vehicle pollutes, so it is important to keep up with basic preventive measures like ensuring fluids are changed regularly, engines are tuned properly, worn belts are replaced, and tires are inflated to the correct pressure.

Help improve air quality in the Baltimore region by joining us at one of these upcoming Clean Car Clinics!
