The following news "briefs" highlight recent news regarding transportation-related environmental issues, primarily air quality, affecting the Baltimore region. Please note that this brief is not all inclusive of the variety and magnitude of activities in the region. Request for CMAQ Applications Now Open

The Baltimore Regional Transportation Board is proud to announce the 2007 BRTB CMAQ Competitive Selection Process. The Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) Program is a federal funding program administered by the Federal Highway Administration and the Federal Transit Administration that provides funding for projects and programs that reduce air pollution emissions from the transportation sector. Learn how to apply for BRTB CMAQ funding by going online at www.baltometro.org. You will be able to find information about how to apply for funding to support projects that reduce air pollution emissions from the Baltimore region's transportation sector.

Light Truck Hybrid Transmissions Produced in Baltimore County

As of yesterday, General Motors Corp. is now manufacturing the first two-mode hybrid transmission for light trucks - and it's happening here in the Baltimore region. The Allison Transmission Plant in White Marsh produced the first of the transmissions yesterday. The hybrid transmissions, which use gasoline and battery power, will be soon be an option in new Chevrolet Tahoes and GMC Yukons.

Windswept Grant Program

On October 26, the Maryland Energy Administration announced a new initiative to provide funding for small scale wind energy systems. The MEA Windswept Grant Program can assist residential or non- residential Marylanders in funding these projects. For more information, call 1-800-723-6374 or e-mail meainfo@energy.state.md.us.

Virtual Green Highway

Learn about green highway practices by checking out this interactive web page, located on the Green Highways Partnership web site. The Green Highways Partnership is a voluntary public/private initiative that promotes the use of green highway technologies. The Partnership is "dedicated to transforming the relationship between the environment and transportation infrastructure."

New Web Site Shares Chesapeake Bay Health Information

A new web site came online this year that shares information on various health indicators of the Chesapeake Bay. This web site shows graphs that track the percent of goal achieved for these measures of bay health. You can also use an interactive graphic which shows the contribution of various bay pollution sources for different watersheds in Maryland.

Revised Executive Summary for Transportation Outlook 2035 and Updated Conformity Determination Now Online

The Baltimore Regional Transportation Board (BRTB) has released a revised draft of the Executive Summary of Transportation Outlook 2035, the long-range transportation plan for the Baltimore region, for public review and comment. It is available online, at the Regional Information Center in the Baltimore Metropolitan Council, at key public libraries, and at local planning offices. The members of the BRTB agreed to defer six highway projects to provide additional funding for MARC. Among the proposed improvements to MARC is an East Baltimore station, which will serve the Bayview campus and provide connectivity with a proposed Red Line extension to Bayview. A revised Draft Air Quality Conformity Determination of the Draft Plan for Transportation Outlook 2035 and the Final Draft FY 2008-2012 Transportation Improvement Program has also been released for public review. Both documents can be found online at www.baltometro.org.

A public review period runs through Tuesday, November 13, 2007. The public is invited to provide comment on the revised plan and share their thoughts at a public meeting on Thursday, November 1 from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Baltimore Metropolitan Council, 2700 Lighthouse Point East, Suite 310, Baltimore, MD 21224.
