Dear Monica,

The following news "briefs" highlight recent news regarding transportation-related environmental issues, primarily air quality, affecting the Baltimore region. Please note that this brief is not all inclusive of the variety and magnitude of activities in the region. It is intended for informational purposes only; refer to the source, guidance, or program for additional information.
Recycling More Grant Program
Grants of up to $500 will be made available through the Recycling More grant program of the Initiative for a Cleaner, Greener Baltimore. The goals of the Recycling More grant program are to:
  • Get more people recycling through neighborhood driven efforts.
  • Provide recycling education to residents.
  • Find out how many more people are recycling as a result of the neighborhood driven efforts.
  • Get people comfortable with recycling.
  • Provide accessibility to recycling bins if necessary.
Baltimore City community organizations that are 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations or have a fiscal sponsor that is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization may apply. Past Recycling More grantees are eligible to apply if they have fulfilled the terms of their Recycling More grant.
Open for Review: Air Quality Conformity Report for 2011-2014 Transportation Program and Plan

Just over $1 billion in transportation projects and improvements are being proposed in the Draft 2011-2014 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) for the Baltimore region, recently released for review.

A corresponding air quality report regarding the impact of the proposed projects on the Baltimore region is also available for review and comment.

What's in the Draft TIP?

  • Bridge and highway preservation - Approximately 61% of the funding in this draft TIP is for these type of projects. Examples include the addition of one lane northbound on US 29 between Seneca Drive and MD 175 and an extension of Danville Street in a former CSX right-of-way to support freight movement near the Port.

  • Projects that benefit biking and walking including: North Avenue Streetscape, improvements to the neighborhood around the West Baltimore MARC station, and the reconstruction, with bike compatible features, of the US 40 bridge over the Patapsco River and US 1 bridge over the Little Gunpowder Falls.

  • Transit improvements include MARC parking expansion at the Aberdeen station, mid-life overhaul of Light Rail and Metro vehicles and replacement buses for MTA and the local bus systems.

Let the Baltimore Regional Transportation Board (BRTB) know what you think about the air quality report and these proposed projects at a public meeting on June 8 or share your thoughts online. Comments are welcome through Tuesday, June 22.
