Push for Clean Car Legislation

hybrid synergy
In Maryland's upcoming legislative session, Del. Elizabeth Bobo from Howard County will reportedly be sponsoring legislation for a Clean Cars Program. This program, which has been advocated by environmental and health groups, would be equivalent to the State of California vehicle standards, consisting of the Low Emission Vehicle II (LEV II) standards. The LEV II standards reduce emissions by establishing fleet-wide limits on tailpipe emissions and by requiring the sale of advanced technology vehicles. The Clean Cars Program would also consist of standards for greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles.

The Program would result in cars costing slightly more, but the consumer would save money in operating costs. Carbon dioxide emissions from cars and light trucks, which are a large contributor to global warming, would be reduced 14 percent below projected levels in 2020. Ten states have already adopted the Clean Cars Program, and other states are considering it.
