Wanted: Multi-Taskers for Bike to Work Day
WANTED: BUDGET-CONSIOUS MULTI-TASKERS WHO CARE ABOUT THE AIR FOR BIKE TO WORK DAY ON MAY 16
BALTIMORE (March 10, 2008) – The Baltimore Metropolitan Council (BMC) is sponsoring its 11th annual Bike to Work Day on Friday May 16, 2008, in conjunction with national Bike to Work Day. Bicycle commuters throughout the Baltimore region will converge on five locations between 7:00 and 8:30 a.m.:
- Anne Arundel County/Annapolis - City Dock, Annapolis
- Baltimore City - War Memorial Plaza at City Hall (100 N. Holliday St.)
- Baltimore County - Courthouse Square (400 Washington Ave, Towson)
- Harford County - Government Center (220 S. Main St, Bel Air)
- Howard County - The Mall in Columbia by Sears Service Center (10300 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia)
Satellite rallies will also be held in Carroll County (Westminster) and Anne Arundel County (Northrop Grumman).
Bike to Work Day is a major component of BMC’s 6th Annual Clean Commute Month, which is observed during the entire month of May. May is the beginning of ground-level ozone season, the time when Code Red and Orange Bad Air Day announcements inform us when the air becomes unhealthful to breathe – especially for the young, the elderly, and anyone with respiratory problems.
During Clean Commute Month, residents are encouraged to help clear the air by trying an alternative to driving to and from work alone. Alternatives include walking, biking, using transit, carpooling and telecommuting. Commuting by bicycle is a great way to reduce vehicle emissions and improve the quality of the air we breathe.
Biking to work provides personal benefits, too. With gasoline prices inching towards $4 per gallon, bicycling to work can add up to real money in your pocket. Biking to work can also save you time by combining your daily trip to work with your daily workout. You won’t have to squeeze in a special trip to the gym.
Sound interesting? The first 225 registrants will receive a free T-shirt and musette bag. The first 500 registrants will receive a free T-shirt. All participants will also receive an on-the-go snack with java. Registrants will have the chance to win bike accessories or the grand prize, a bicycle tour for 2 on the C&O Canal/Great Allegheny Passage, courtesy of Adventure Cycling.
So join us for Bike to Work Day 2008 on Friday May 16, between 7:00 and 8:30 a.m. Register by May 9 at http://bmc.baltometro.org/b2w/b2wreg.asp. You must be registered to attend a rally and win prizes.
