Public Participation Plan 2007: About the BRTB

II. About the BRTB

The BRTB is the federally designated Metropolitan Planning Organization for the Baltimore region, the organization responsible for providing regional transportation policy and overseeing the federal transportation planning process. This process encourages full and fair participation from the public.

The ten members of the Baltimore Regional Transportation Board are made up of the chief elected officials from each jurisdiction in the region. In addition, the Board includes the Secretaries of the Maryland Departments of Transportation, Environment, and Planning.

One of the key missions of the BRTB is to develop, promote, and ensure implementation of a regional long-range transportation plan. This regional plan presents the transportation goals and policies that frame transportation decision making in the region, as well as strategies and projects that are to be implemented in the region over a twenty year period.
The BRTB includes elected officials from the cities of Annapolis and Baltimore, and the counties of Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford, and Howard.

To meet its mission, the BRTB engages in a continuing, cooperative and comprehensive planning process that addresses a number of federal planning process functions.

These functions include air quality conformity, transportation equity, and planning for the various transportation modes (bicycle, pedestrian, freight, transit, etc). Public involvement is a key part of that process.
