Homeland Security Grants Awarded

HOMELAND SECURITY GRANTS AWARDED TO NON-PROFITS FOR CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTS

BALTIMORE (May 2, 2007) – The Baltimore Urban Area Work Group (UAWG) for homeland security has awarded a total of nearly $650,000 to 34 community organizations in the Baltimore region.  The grants, ranging from $800 to $35,000, will be used to enhance security at facilities judged to be at risk for terrorist attacks.

The UAWG is composed of emergency management officials from the Baltimore Metropolitan Council’s member jurisdictions, which include Baltimore City and Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford and Howard counties, plus the City of Annapolis.  Grants were awarded to organizations in the City of Annapolis, Baltimore City, and Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Harford and Howard counties.  Recipients included synagogues, mosques, interfaith centers, religious schools and community centers.  Projects include upgrades to access controls and security systems, surveillance cameras, shatter-proof glass, and improved lighting.

“There is a critical need to protect both local government and community facilities from terrorist activities,” said Harford County Executive David R. Craig, the BMC Chair. “Infrastructure improvements funded by this grant program will assist local law enforcement and emergency management agencies by making potential targets less attractive to those who seek to do harm.”

This was the second round of awards made through the Community-Based Criticial Infrastructure Protection Grant Program.  In 2005, approximately $1 million was awarded to 29 organizations for security enhancements.
