BRTB Press Release: May 1, 2007

THE BRTB INVITES THE PUBLIC TO VIEW PROPOSED TRANSPORTATION PROJECTS ON THE WEB, SUBMIT COMMENTS
BALTIMORE (May 1, 2007) – Finding out about what’s being done to improve transportation in your community over the next five years just got a little easier. A web site hosted by the Baltimore Metropolitan Council (BMC) puts information about proposed transportation projects in the Baltimore metropolitan area at your fingertips. Visitors to http://bmc.baltometro.org/tips_web can review draft projects near their home or anywhere in the region. Included with the project descriptions are projected costs and a map showing the location of the project, if appropriate.
The information includes a detailed listing of projects included in the metropolitan area Baltimore Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). Projects are drawn from recommendations in the long-range transportation plan for the Baltimore region. The TIP documents the anticipated timing, cost, and rationale for transportation improvements in the Baltimore region over the next five years.
The TIP includes:
- Road resurfacing
- Bridge repairs, rehabilitation, and painting
- Pedestrian overpasses near schools
- Pedestrian/bicycle trails
- Wheelchair-accessible buses and other vehicles
- A new park-and-ride facility
- Additional surface parking at local MARC stations
- New traffic signal detection systems
The projects included in the TIP serve as the basis for requesting federal transportation funds in fiscal years 2008 through 2012.
Since the activities included in the TIP by the Baltimore Regional Transportation Board (BRTB) are supported primarily through federal dollars, public participation is invaluable in making sound fiscal decisions. Transportation affects each of us every single day. Public input ensures that our transportation network truly serves our needs.
The public is encouraged to visit the TIP database at http://bmc.baltometro.org/tips_web and submit comments by to Baltimore Regional Transportation Board, (Attention: Public Involvement Coordinator) 2700 Lighthouse Point East, Suite 310, Baltimore, MD 21224-4774, fax # 410-732-8248, or e-mail: mhaines@baltometro.org. Comments may also be submitted using the public comment form on www.baltometro.org. The public review and comment period will run through May 29.
