Bridge maintenance is an ongoing process for both State Highway Administration and Maryland Transportation Authority. This page is designed to give you more information about how each of these agencies maintains its bridges. In addition, if you have a question or concern about a bridge maintenance issue, you can contact the right person at SHA or MdTA to get help.
 SHA Bridge Maintenance
SHA bridges undergo a routine inspection process at least every two years, although many bridges are inspected more frequently. All SHA bridges are inspected by SHA employees who have completed the Federal Comprehensive Bridge Inspection Course.
SHA bridge inspectors’ findings are reported to the SHA Bridge Inspection and Remedial Engineering Division. This office reviews what work is necessary. This work is then prioritized by engineers based on the degree of deterioration, potential impact to the traveling public, available resources, etc.
Repairs are made by SHA contractors. In addition, minor maintenance activities are handled daily by SHA district offices. Each of SHA’s seven districts have their own bridge contractor to handle such work as deck patching, debris, and drainage systems.
Because all inspections and decisions about repairs are made under one roof, SHA is able to ensure that the most important work gets completed first.

 MdTA Bridge Maintenance
MdTA bridges and tunnels are inspected annually by engineering consultants. Tunnel walls, lighting, roadways and toll plazas are some of the major pieces included in the inspection.
Inspectors report their findings to the MdTA Engineering Division, which determines what rehabilitation is necessary and programs improvements into the MdTA portion of the six-year Consolidated Transportation Program (CTP). MdTA engineers prioritize work based on degree of deterioration, potential impact to motorists, available resources, etc. Most structure rehabilitation is performed by contractors, while some maintenance is performed by MdTA maintenance staff.
