Bridge structures are owned and maintained by local and state agencies. However, the SHA monitors jurisdiction compliance with the Federal regulations found in the National Bridge Inspection Standards.
At present the SHA system has 2,500 bridge structures (greater than 20 feet in length) statewide. In the Baltimore region, SHA oversees 395 bridges in Baltimore County, 265 in Anne Arundel County, 88 in Harford County, 88 in Howard County, and 65 in Carroll County. SHA does not oversee bridges in Baltimore City, which has 290 bridges. Learn more about the historic bridges of Maryland.
