Geocoding Services
Eighty-five per cent of all business data contains some geographic component, an attribute linking it to some area on the surface of the Earth. This is normally a street address or a ZIP code.
Geocoding is the process of finding an object's location on a map based upon that geographic attribute.
The Baltimore Metropolitan Council uses NAVTEQ® NAVSTREETS® for the Baltimore Region as the basis for its premium geocoding services. We apply our own geocoding technology and staff expertise developed over many years.
The quality of all geocoding locations is consistent, since BMC’s matching operations do not allow approximations. We do not match to ZIP+4 centroids, the centers of streets within ZIP areas, tract centroids, or other techniques needed with lower quality maps, less capable matching software, and staff without BMC’s experience.

Customers receive the best possible products from this service: more records in their address lists are matched to precise locations. Fewer records are left to process manually, ignore, or discard.
The NAVTEQ® NAVSTREETS®, along with our high-performance geocoding software, allows BMC to place greater than 99% of the street addresses within the Baltimore region on the map for you.
Once an address has been found, we can add the following items to your addressed data records:
Coordinates
Coordinate Systems (Several ways of locating an address relative to the segment of street where it appears, depending upon your needs)
Old or New Maryland State Plane Longitude/Latitude Based upon NAD 27 or NAD 83 Any other projection supported by ESRI, for an additional fee
Standardized street names
