Bicycle Planning
According to a 2003 U.S. Department of Transportation survey of more than 9,600 adults, 73% of respondents would welcome new and/or improved bicycle facilities such as bike lanes and bike paths. Unfortunately, many roadways in the Baltimore region do not provide an acceptable level of service and safe access for bicycles, according to a 2004 Baltimore Metropolitan Council study.
Having safe access for people – young and old – who want to bike for pleasure or bike to work is important for our region. Bicycling is a healthy mode of transportation, helps reduce traffic congestion, and increases quality of life. However, it is essential that when people do go out for a bike ride, they can do so safely. Through the planning process, we work to improve conditions in the region.
The goal of bicycle planning at the local level is to provide for bicycle travel within a community, encouraging more bicycling and at the same time reducing the number of serious bicycling crashes and injuries. Such efforts typically mean focusing on small-scale improvements and local environments.
